“I guess I’m a little weird. I like to talk to trees and animals. That’s okay though; I have more fun than most people. ”
– Bob Ross
As excited as I was to research UI best practices and carefully craft each screen last week, this week has found me disillusioned and humbled by the wonderful product designers out there. It’s really hard job! There are an incredible amount of decisions and choices to consider – and that could be just for the landing/splash page, not to mention the actual flow of the app.
I’ve enjoyed thinking through what Craigslist isn’t providing for parents and then thinking about ways my app could fill those gaps. While this was fun to consider, turning those thoughts into action steps that would actually be seen in the final design has been difficult. There is a lot more time I would like to devote to this project than I currently have the bandwidth to do – I feel a bit sad about that.
On a positive note, I did hand-draw a few animal icons for my logo sketches, including this cute little chick I drew for the final logo. I like the hand-drawn vibe it has while still seeming stylish enough, in my opinion, to grace an app screen. Pushing myself to draw and bring those sketches into my computer felt good and I’m glad to have accomplished that goal from last week.
My screens are getting there but truly designing an app with the level of specificity and attention I want to give it is difficult to do between work and school. Since I really like this branding, I plan to pursue further refinements of it during summer Booklab classes.
